Mutualism is a interspecific relationship between two organisms. In this relationship organisms live in close association and are dependent on each other. In mutualism both organisms receives the benefit of association.
A Lichen is an example of mutualism. It is a composite organism, that develops due to mutalistic relationship between algae and fungi. In this mutalistic relationship both organisms are benefited. The fungi is benefited by the carbohydrates produced by the algae during photosynthesis. The algae receives shelter inside the network of fungal hyphae, fungal hyphae also provides moisture and impermeable nutrients to algae.
A symbiotic relationship in which one organism can take
advantage and the other is not harmed The treehopper-ant mutualism becomes
parasitic in years when spiders are rare, because the treehoppers no longer
derive a large benefit but pay a fitness cost.
