The Love Canal District was contaminated due to toxic industrial waste that was dumped I. to the canal in the district, contaminating it with dangerous chemicals and waste. Instead of cleaning it up to provide for and make room for a new neighborhood, the government capped the canal and built the neighborhood ontoo of it. Later, this resulted in cancer, birth defects, miscarriages, and many other illnesses, mostly affecting the children who played in the nieghborhood streets.
