The answer is the first choice, "Be afraid and unsure of what the noise really is."

The wording of the first line suggests that the speaker does not know where the noise is coming from. "And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain." Not only the first line but the diction throughout the poem. "Fantastic terrors" "...The beating of my heart."
