An essay is a type of personal nonfiction. First of all, essays are nonfiction, meaning that you can eliminate any option which has fiction in it. Fiction are novels, poems, plays, etc. whereas essays, political texts, memoirs, encyclopedias, etc. are nonfiction - they aren't made up. Essays do not provide you with technical information - those would be manuals or instructions.
