They had no rights.  They would work on the fields from sunrise to sunset.  Sometimes they would also work cleaning houses and doing other chores.  The frightening aspect of being a slave is that you are at the mercy of your master. If he is kind then you are lucky but there is still a possibility of cruel punishment.  Many slaves were whipped and some slave families were broken apart to be sold as property to someone else.  It was not a good life.
