The arrest and murder of Ngo Dinh Diem, then president of South Vietnam, marked the culmination of a successful coup d'état perpetrated by the CIA and led by General Duong Van Minh in November 1963. On the morning of November 2, In 1963, Diem and his adviser, his younger brother Ngo Dinh Nhu, were arrested after the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ERVN) succeeded in a bloody siege all night long at the Gia Long Palace in Saigon. The coup meant the end of nine years of autocratic and nepotist family rule in South Vietnam.

Ngo DinhDiem,Vietnamese politician served as the last Prime Minister of the “State of Vietnam” and served to his post until his assassination in 1963. After proclaiming the Vietnam republic, Diem led to the establishment of an anti-communist supporter nation and initiated many schemes laying emphasis on rural and industrial development. Diem favored Buddhist minorities and Catholics that resulted in the “Buddhist Crisis” of 1963. The crisis broke the Vietnamese-American relation and its relation with other countries also.  

The arrest and murder of Ngo Dinh Diem and later the President of “South Vietnam” manifested a successful coup defeat instituted by CIA and supervised by General Duong Van Minh during November of 1963. The whole incidents occurred as in the morning of 2nd November Diem along with his brother and adviser were arrested by the armed forces of the “Republic of Vietnam” and were assassinated. Diem was buried in an unblemished grave in the cemetery next the US Ambassador’s house. His death ended 9 years of autocracy of Vietnam.
