Question 1: In Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) white eye color (w) and stubby body shape (s) are encoded by two mutant allel

es on the X chromosome and are recessive to red eye (W) and full body (S). A heterozygous female is crossed to a white eyed and stubby body male. These two genes on the X chromosome are completely linked.
What are the genotypes of both parent flies (2pts)
What are all the potential phenotypes and genotypes of the F1 progeny (10pts)

Question 2: A homozygous dominant red eye (W) fruit fly with full length wings (V) is crossed to a homozygous recessive white eyed (w) male with vestigial sized wings (v). Eye color gene (red/white) is on the X chromosome and wing size gene (full or vestigial) is on chromosome 2.

What are the genotypes of the parental cross (2pts)
Write out a list of genotypes and phenotypes of the F1 offspring. (4pts)
If the F1 offspring are self-crossed what would the phenotypes and genotypes of the F2 males be? (12pts)

Answer:

A female Drosophila of unknown genotype was crossed with a white-eyed male fly, of genotype (w = white eye allele is recessive, w+= red-eye allele is dominant.) Half of the male and half of the female offspring were red-eyed, and half of the male and half of the female offspring were white-eyed.If the trait is dominant, one of the parents must have the trait. Dominant traits will not skip a generation. If the trait is recessive, neither parent is required to have the trait since they can be heterozygous.The female fly had to be heterozygous, Xw+ Xw.

A fellow student in the class is looking at a slide of onion root tip cells and is excited that he can see the chromosomes under
marin [14]

Answer:

The correct answer should be the second option, that is, Onion root tip cells do not undergo anaphase 1.

Anaphase I is a part of meiosis which occurs only in cells involved in reproduction. For example, gametes.

Onion root tip  cells undergo mitosis.

The chromosome can be observed using compound microscope.

Thus, all other options are incorrect except second option.

How is agrovoltaics different from floatovoltaics? How are they similar?
larisa [96]

Answer:

The differences are;

1) Agrovoltaics is the development of a piece of land for use in agriculture and electricity generation by photovoltaic panels

Flotovoltaic is the development of water bodies for the generation of solar power by mounting solar on platforms placed over a water body rather than on land

2) With agrovoltaics, solar power, breeding of livestock, and crop production can take place on the the same land which increases profitability and reduces the cost of electricity production by solar energy

3) The efficiency of the generation of power from solar energy on the agrovoltaic system is lower than the efficiency of solar power generation through the agrovoltaic system

The similarities are;

1) Both systems seek to maximize the use of space for solar power generation

2) The source of power generation is solar power in both systems

3) Both systems make use of solar panels for the generation of electricity

What are the three types of osmosis? What happens during each phase?
Vanyuwa [196]
An isotonic solution is when the solute concentration is balanced with the concentration inside the cell , the water movement still moves between the solution, but the rates are the same in both directions, the water is balanced inside and outside the cell .

A hypotonic solution is when the solute concentration is lower than the concentration inside the cell. water moves into the cell and can cause the cell to swell; cells that don’t have a cell wall, such as animal cells, could explode in this type of solution.

A hypertonic solution is when the solute concentration is higher than the concentration inside the cell. In a hypertonic solution, the water moves out of the cell and causes the cell to shrivel.
