For example: The trains were packed<em> but </em> we managed to get on ours  <em>since</em> we had been running late for work. The italiced words are used to coordinate the ideas: <em>but </em>is a coordinating conjunction and <em>since</em> is a subordinating conjunction.

The trains were packed. ( <em>but ?</em>) Our train was full of people. ( <em>Since?</em>) It was late. This may be an example of choppy and short sentences. It is difficult to link them by coordination; have a look at the words in parentheses.
