General Douglas MacArthur left the Philippines during World War II because the Japanese were attacking his forces.

Explanation:

General Douglas MacArthur, his family, and all his staff decided to leave the Philippines as the Japanese were surrounding his forces. When they arrived in Australia, General Douglas made a speech in which he said: "I came through and I shall return". This speech became famous.

General Douglas was a recognized United States Army officer who got an important record in World War I. After this, he became a defense advisor in the Philippines government.

When the Japanese invaded the Philippines in March 1942, President  Franklin D. Roosevelt was concerned about MacArthur's situation especially because he thought MacArthur would become a prisoner and ordered him to leave Australia.
