Answer: D. Nieben’s reaction reveals that he pities the dog.

Explanation:

This is a very inetersting  and most popular story. In Charles Boardman Hawes' "The Wild Dog of Caucomgomoc" there is a man who has an unexpected friend with a dog feared by the whole city. So he only fears by town but have pities for the dog as well.
