The answer is chunking. Elena memorize numbers in a group is an example of chunking.

EXPLANATION

Chunking refers to the process of an individual by taking pieces of information and grouping them into chunks. If there is a lot of information that you need to remember, then you can group the information so you can memorize more amount of information. It is easier to memorize information in a group.

The easiest example of chunks is phone number sequence. Instead of memorizing 089485739281, it will be easier for people to memorize 0894-8573-9281. Memorizing in groups will be easier to retain and recall.

By separating the individual elements into larger groups, the information becomes easier to memorize. It becomes easier to memorize because our brain is limited in short term memory. The brain can only remember 4 chunks of information in short term memory.

By allowing chunking, people can take smaller bits of information and make it more memorable. They can make it more meaningful, therefore easier to memorize. They can connect each individual in the chunks so it will be more memorable. They can also make a connection between chunks so it will be more difficult to forget. In other words, chunking will enhance our ability to memorize things. People’s ability to chunk information will improve over time.
