In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act chartered the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific Railroad Companies, and tasked them with building a transcontinental railroad that would link the United States from east to west. Pacific Railroad Act was passed into law by Lincoln which lead to the creation of two companies, the Central Pacific in the west and the Union Pacific in which both companies were tasked with construction of a transcontinental railroad across the United States
