Republican Senator Joseph R. McCarthy (Wisconsin) spent almost five years accusing American people of being Communist inside the United States government, included the armed forces. He believed the American government was full of spies that betrayed the country. When he attacked the Army in 1954, the Senate reprimanded him and censured him. He lost his followers and was relegated in the Senate.
