The root <em>"alter"</em> comes from the <em>Latin</em>, which literally means <em>"other"</em>; then through French influence, probably from the times when the Norman invasion to England was occurring, it settled as <em>alteration</em>, referring to the process of changing, <em>being changed</em> , modified, or as the difference derived through changes. Hence <em>"alternate"</em> conveys <em>reciprocity</em>, in the sense of <em>interchanging each other's places</em> one after another, or basically <em>"every other"</em>.

Is 13 colleges too many to apply to?
Vedmedyk [2.9K]

Answer:

<em>While there's no cap on the number of schools you can apply to some people especially those from affluent backgrounds who want to go to a selective college, can go overboard, applying to more than 20 or 30 colleges. Personally, I would strongly discourage any student from applying to more than 15 colleges. So as long as you don't go over 15 I would say you should be fine.</em>

Which lines in "the raven" show that the speaker has lost hope of ever being able to moce on and recover from the pain of losing
expeople1 [14]
<span /><span><span><span>
The speaker is burying himself in books, in "many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore," in order to find "surcease of sorrow" over the death of "a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore." The whole poem is haunted by the death of this maiden. The speaker wonders if there is an afterlife in which he might hope to meet her again--but the raven replies to all such questions with the single word "Nevermore." In an early stanza of the poem, the speaker throws open the shutter and peers out into the darkness, hoping against hope that the tapping he kept hearing was made by the spirit of Lenore. "The only word there uttered was the whispered word 'Lenore.'" But there is no response. The raven with its single-word vocabulary symbolizes the painful truth the speaker cannot escape--that he has lost his loved one forever.
