Answer: C.Eric doesn't really think it's fun to be around John.

Although Eric is behaving politely towards John, as he says "hello" and also tells him that it is a pleasure to see him again, the author suggests this is false. By describing his thoughts, we see that Eric thinks the picnic is going to be worse because of John's presence. He also seems annoyed at the fact that John shows up at events often. We can conclude from this that Eric does not think it is fun to be around John.
