Alexander Stephens was an American politician who served as the 50th Governor of Georgia from 1882 to 1883. He was a Southern Whig who strongly opposed the Mexican-American War. He was also a prominent supporter of the Compromise of 1850. He opposed secession, at the same time as he wanted to expand slavery into the territories.
