346 immigrants from Barbados joined the small number of African Americans went to Liberia after the American Civil War. At that time, the abolitionists did not think that this immigration would have a good result because they believed that the conditions in Liberia were very unfavorable and would not provide a good quality of life, in addition, many African Americans considered themselves American and would not adapt well the culture and rule of the Liberia. The abolitionists also felt that such immigration would remove the potential political influence that African Americans had, because in Liberia they could not achieve full participation in the social, civic, and political life of the nation.
