Paine wrote the passage in The Crisis to convince colonists to revolt against the British rule. He cited a revolutionary war against Britain was supported by God. The British had no right to rule or conquer the colonies and independence was a natural right and interest. He also warned against expecting mercy from the Brits during the war.
