JK = 7x + 2, KL = 5x + 4 and JL = 12

JK + KL = JL

Plug in the equations for the Lines

7x + 2 + 5x + 4 = 12

Combine like-terms

12x + 2 + 4 = 12

12x + 6 = 12

Subtract 6 from either side

12x + 6 = 12

      -6      -6

12x = 6

Divide either side by 12

12x / 12 = 6/ 12

x= 1/2 or .5
