The Union victory at Vicksburg divided the Confederacy in half, further weakening the South.

Explanation:

The Union fought over a period of a couple of months in laying siege to the stronghold of Vicksburg, which lay near the Mississippi River. This fort controlled the river, and was situated near the middle of the Southern front. In taking the city, the Union was able to split armies and supplies lines in half, and was able to attack from multiple fronts.
