In 1836, the Texan Army defeated the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto under <span>Sam Houston </span>, winning independence for Texas. During the Mexican-American War of the late 1840's, Mexico attempted to annex Texas. The Americans won the war and Texas remained a U.S. state.
