चित्रकलाको इतिहास निकै पुरानो छ । यसको सम्बन्ध मानव सभ्यताको इतिहाससँगै जोडिएको छ । मानव सभ्यताको विकाससँगै धर्म, संस्कृति, सामाजिक मूल्य मान्यतामा केन्द्रित भइ निर्माण गरिएका चित्रहरु परम्परागत, चित्रकलाका नमुना हुन् । आधुनिक चित्रकलाको सुरुवात निकै पछि भएपनि ग्रन्थचित्रहरुले त्यसको ठाउँ लिएका छन् । परम्परागत रुपमा केवल ग्रन्थको शोभा र विषय वस्तु स्पष्ट पार्न कोरिने ग्रन्थचित्रहरुको प्रभाव अहिले झनै बढ्न थालेको छ । विद्यार्थीलाई पढाउन, मनोभावनालाई खुलस्त पार्न र सिकाइका लागि वस्तुनिष्ठ बनाउन चित्रकलाको व्यापक प्रयोग गरिन्छ । यसको पूर्वज ग्रन्थचित्र नै हो । यसरी चित्रकलाको विकासमा ग्रन्थचित्रले उल्लेखनीय भूमिका पु¥याएको प्रष्ट हुन्छ ।

Others claim that the foundation for ASL existed before FSL was introduced in America in 1817.

It was in that year that a French teacher named Laurent Clerc, brought to the United States by Thomas Gallaudet, founded the first school for the deaf in Hartford, Connecticut.
