Answer:

If General Zarkoff had not been so kind to Rainsford in the beginning, the story would not have the twist it does when Rainsford decides to hunt Zarkoff and kill him in his sleep.  When Rainsford and Ivan celebrate afterwards in the mansion, the story does take a lighter turn.  The dancers and music create a very festive mood which helps us forget Rainsford's barbaric actions earlier.
