The Gallipoli campaign or the Dardanelles campaign was a World War I campaign that took place on the Gallipoli (today's Turkey), which started with a naval attack by British and French forces.

Explanation:

During 1915, the Allied Powers attempted to occupy the Gallipoli Peninsula and the Dardanelles to access to Constantinople, expel the Ottoman Empire from the war and open a Black Sea route towards Russia.

The battle ended in 1916 with the complete withdrawal of the invading forces, after the heavy losses among old naval ships and military forces, because of inadequate equipment and lack of experience.
