Capitalism is the system that allows wealthy people to invest their money in projects and earn (or lose!) Even more money. Allow anyone rich enough to do this. Historian Eric Williams argued that Europeans made a great deal of money from their network of colonies and their sugar, cotton and tobacco plantations. This capital, occasionally named "wealth," had to be invested someplace. It was used to pay for the industrialization of Europe. Therefore, the transatlantic slave trade and plantation wealth were the main causes of the growth of capitalism in Europe.
