The author uses a chronological text structure in this excerpt because it  gives readers a clear picture of the sequence of events in order to make the readers to understand what happened on that day.

Chronological order is the order in which things happen, when the story is arranged in order of occurrence, in other words, chronological texts organize events in the order they happened  and It is also called time order. This particular text structure is common in current events, history etc.

An example of chronological text structure is a biography that starts in 1761 and goes through 1800.
