Before and after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, most provinces and ex-provinces of the empire were engulfed in constant war as a consequence of the Germanic invasions that began in 409 A.D., which in combination with other factors brought about a number of negative effects on the size of the European population in comparison to its size during the best years of the Roman Empire:

  • Even before the Germanic invasions, the Roman government had raised the taxes so high, and bound the farmers to their lands, so that many farmers became indebted to great landowners, and the only way they had to pay the high interest rates on the loans they borrowed was indenture servitude (the debtor has to work for the creditor until the debt is paid off, something that never happened). In many cases, farmers fled indenture servitude and died because of starvation, armed robberies or as innocent victims of fights between armed Germanic bands. This situation depopulated formerly highly populated provinces like Gaul.
  • The constant decrease in food production because of farmers fleeing from tax collectors and/or indenture servitude brought about a shortage of food in the cities and a decrease in the birth rate.
  • The shortage of food also affected the nutrition of the population and made them prone to illness and disease and an increase in the mortality rate.
  • Before the Germanic invasions , literacy in the Western Roman Empire was high and the amount of books owned per person was high as well. Because of the violence of the invasions, many books were destroyed as households were burned down or abandoned, and people because more concerned with survival than literacy. Only Church clergymen remained literate.
  • Since nearly all books containing all the theoretical and practical knowledge on technological subjects were lost during the Germanic invasions, many of the advances achieved by Greek and Romans became unavailable until rediscovered by the Arabs and reintroduced to Europe in the Late Middle Ages.
  • The breakdown of the Roman bureaucracy and cease of tax collection resulted in the neglect of cities, roads, aqueducts, city public buildings  maintenance and other important elements of infrastructure. As cities no longer received food from the countryside, their inhabitants emigrated to the countryside in search for food. By 408 AD, Rome had a population of nearly one million inhabitants. One century later, its population would not surpass 10,000 inhabitants.

t’s always going to be an asymmetrical comparison.

Do you compare the Roman empire as its peak with 12th century France or just Roman Gaul? Significant parts of Europe were never under Roman control to begin with and those would have been more advanced in the early middle ages than during Roman times. Besides that many regions of Europe such as Britannia, Gaul, Germania and the Danube region had a low population during Roman times whereas they had a higher one during the Middle Ages.

Alice Paul

Answer:

Explanation:

1913-Less than a century ago, women in the United States were not guaranteed the right to vote. Many courageous groups worked hard at state and local levels throughout the end of the 19th century, making some small gains toward women's suffrage. In 1913, the first major national efforts were undertaken, beginning with a massive parade in Washington, D.C., on March 3—one day before the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson. Organized by Alice Paul for the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the parade, calling for a constitutional amendment, featured 8,000 marchers, including nine bands, four mounted brigades, 20 floats, and an allegorical performance near the Treasury Building. Though the parade began late, it appeared to be off to a good start until the route along Pennsylvania Avenue became choked with tens of thousands of spectators—mostly men in town for the inauguration. Marchers were jostled and ridiculed by many in the crowd. Some were tripped, others assaulted. Policemen appeared to be either indifferent to the struggling paraders, or sympathetic to the mob. Before the day was out, one hundred marchers had been hospitalized. The mistreatment of the marchers amplified the event—and the cause—into a major news story and led to congressional hearings, where the D.C. superintendent of police lost his job. What began in 1913 took another seven years to make it through Congress. In 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment secured the vote for women.

1977-t was the early 1970s, and the women's movement was on a roll. The 92nd Congress, in session from 1971-72, passed more women’s rights bills than all previous legislative sessions combined, including the Title IX section of the Education Amendments (which prohibited sex discrimination in all aspects of education programs receiving federal support). The 1972 Supreme Court case Eisenstadt v. Baird gave unmarried women legal access to birth control, and in 1973, Roe v. Wade made abortion legal across the country. Even the avowedly anti-feminist President Nixon supported a 1972 Republican Party platform that included feminist goals, including federal childcare programs.
