Sampling error is a statistical error that occurs when an analyst does not select a sample that represents the entire population of data and the results found in the sample do  not represent the results that would be obtained from the entire population. It is a deviation in sampled value versus the true population value due to the fact the sample is not representative of the population or biased in some way.

These errors occur because of variation in the number or representativeness of the sample that responds. Sampling errors can be controlled by

(1) careful sample designs,

(2) large samples  and

(3) multiple contacts to assure representative response.
