Answer: sold; colonies; alphabet.

The Phoenicians were expert sailors and tradesmen. They are believed to have been the first people to use the North Star to guide their voyages. They also developed knowledge of wind patterns and ocean currents.

As their routes became more regular, the Phoenicians established settlements in areas of land they saw as desirable. These settlements developed into colonies, such as Carthage.

The Phoenician alphabet had 22 symbols, which each symbol standing for a sound. Greeks adopted this way of writing around 750 BC. The Romans adopted the Greek alphabet around 100BC, resulting in an alphabet that looked much like ours today.
