Answer:

The reason Why the Radio Broadcast of War of the Worlds has an orchestra is: Director Orson Welles told the story in journalistic format, giving a realistic tone to the broadcast. The normal programming of the radio was being interrupted gradually by the news of the fall of a meteor and the arrival of ships to the USA. The program was made with all the characteristics of radiojournalism: on the street, interviews with witnesses, opinion of experts and authorities. Welles, for example, played an astronomer. All this gave the impression that the facts were real and live. To pass even more realism, they invested in soundproofing: the sound of the ships was made with the discharge of the bathroom. The newspapers of the day reported that CBS would broadcast a play and, at the beginning of the broadcast, it was announced that it was a radio show. But about 3 million listeners missed these warnings. That is the reason why there are soundtrack on the, so called, real transmission. It was in fact a  radio play very well produced, for the time.
