1. The Union general who was credited with winning the Civil War and who was elected president in 1868

Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) served as General of the Union at the end of the American Civil War from 1864 to 1865 and led the Union army to a victory against the Confederacy. He was proclaimed by many as a national hero.

Three years later, he won the presidential election as a Republican nominee and served as the 18th president of the United States from  1869 through 1877.
