His work had different stages in style, colors and motifs. His early works were inspired by artists such as Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas and Henri Marie Raymond from Toulouse-Lautrec. Then he began his "blue period", because it was the color he used most and his paintings showed human misery, exhausted workers, beggars, alcoholics and prostitutes.
