One way is to check it graphically. I will put in the equations into a graphing calculator to show you that these expressions are not equivalent. Please see the attachment.
The other way is to check it algebraically.
First combine like terms in the second expression.
6x-4-x=5x-4
7x-4 and 5x-4 are not equivalent.
