Chinese instruments were originally made out of natural compononents, wood, stone, animal hair, etc.

They used a pentatonic scale, which means there are no semi tones from any note to the other. Visually this is represented only playing on the black notes on the keyboard or piano.

The pentatonic or 5 tone scale transmitts the idea associated to the elements of nature as seen in the image below, each elements has a special and deeply rooted meaning in the Chinese traditions and folklore.
