General Test taking Tips/Strategies


1). Survey the entire test before they begin. This will help him, or her identify which section will be quick and/or easy, and which will require more time, and thought.


2). Underline important words in the directions such as list, discuss, define, etc.


3). when he, or she take a test, you should do the easy questions first.


4). Schedule his, or here time by, estimating the total time available compared to the number of questions on the test. He, or she need to recognize that some types of questions will take longer than others.


5). Put a checkmark next to any questions he, or she left blank, and he, or she will need to come back to, for completion later.


6). Make sure to hold onto his, or her test until he, or she have looked it over thoroughly. He, or she, should make sure him, or her, have completed each task, and have reread the entire test to verify that you have given the answers you intended.

When I was teaching through UCSC Extension, one of the students asked if I would meet her outside of class for intensive, one-on-one instruction in editing. I agreed. Turns out, she'd been recently hired as an editor by a major player in the industry, and she now found herself in over her head because, actually, she couldn't edit. Her background? She'd been a massage therapist who'd taken to computers when the desktop models first came out, and so she'd begun a small desktop publishing business. As she worked with the various pieces clients gave her, she began to make little corrections here and there. Soon, she was calling herself an editor. (After all, she was making changes in someone else's text, wasn't she?)
