The physical environment provides resources and a platform to use those resources, but can also be a hazard to people. Therefore human impact as a subject is of special concern to physical geographers.

For instance, a desert may not provide the right kind of soil, surface and climate for humans to settle and indulge in any activity. On the other hand, the plains that have fertile soil  and a moderate climate will attract more human activity and settlement.
