The reason to paint the Sistine Chapel was to prove that he, Michelangelo, was able to portray complex elements in a painting. Until that moment, he only executed sculptures, and according to his detractors and rivals (especially Raphael and Bramante), Michelangelo wouldn't accept the task because of his inability to execute flat art. He accepted the task in order to prove the contrary.
