Laterization is a soil formation process which takes place in hot and rainy regions where there is a high rate of chemical weathering of minerals and rocks. The soil formed in this manner is acidic and tend to contain less organic matter since decomposition and leaching are high, which strips the soil of any nutrients.

Since the soil is exposed to the high tropic temperature, it becomes dry with reduced infiltration and fertility; and increased surface runoff. The only nutrients not easily leached are oxides of iron which gives the soil a reddish color and aluminum.
