<em>It </em>stands for window, but as it has been placed near novel, the reader may link <em>it</em> to novel rather than to window. However, out of the clues in the sentence ,we can infer that it refers to the window because the attribution given makes reference to the window. A window is small and gives little light, a book does not.

in the first place we should multiply 1 by 5 and write it over the new fraction and then multiply 2 by -2 and write it under the new fraction, this way you will get 5/-4

Then we Rewrite them like -5/4 + -1/4 = -6/2 and simplify it to -3/2 .
