Call the first integer "n". Then

n + ( n+1) = 77                 =>

2n + 1      = 77                 => subtract 1 from both sides

2n            = 77 - 1 = 76   => divide both sides by 2

n = 76/2 = 38

The first integer is n = 38 and the next consecutive one (= n+1) is 38 + 1 = 39.  Finally, 38 + 39 = 77
