Before being objects of study, coins were considered objects of "curiosity". There are ancient sources that testify to the historical, artistic and symbolic value of coins in ancient times. But it was not until the Renaissance that interest in coins became more 'scientific', imposing collections were formed, and the first numismatic studies were published. Today archeology considers the numismatic document extremely important to inquire into the most varied aspects of past societies.

A coin is not just a way of exchange and defining a value; It is not only an artistic expression that is the result of the works, tastes and techniques of its time, but also a vehicle of a message of identity and power.
