She was the first African American woman to be elected to the U.S Congress
she served 7 terms for New York's 12th district , from 1969 until her retirement in 1982
she also grew up in the Barbados  also in New York city where she learned a graduate degree  from Columbia University in 1952.She taught school before entering the New York Assembly in 1964.

Was an American politician, educator, and author. In 1968, she became the first African American woman elected to the U.S Congress, and represented New York's 12 Congressional District for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she became the first major-party black candidate for President of the U.S, and the first woman ever to run for the Democratic's Party's presidential nomination as well.

Sacagawea was helpful to Lewis and Clark during their expedition in many ways. One way in particular, was as an interpreter for the Native American whose paths they crossed. She could read the landscape well and was wise in what foods were able to be eaten, used as medicine, or to be left alone.
