Upon listening to the mocking-bird song, the author learns that song may help others comfort their hearts as it did with him. Upon his realization he then hopes to help a brother by singing to him. After receiving a smile in return, the author smiles back and feels relieved his own woes have passed away. The mocking bird song is a symbol of hope and comfort in this poem
