One of the dominant themes of the novel is the debate between primitivity and civilization. In this story, we follow the transition that Buck undergoes from civilized to primitive. Buck's former life was defined by his comfortable house in California, and the position of power that he has in that household. However, after he is kidnapped, Buck begins to move towards primitivity, towards the "wild" in a slow but constant way.

The author not only contrasts primitivity and civilization, but he also makes a judgement on these. The author argues that primitivity is the most "authentic" way of life. He implies that the modern phenomena of modernization and civilization go against our true nature.

The Call of the Wild, on the surface, is a story about Buck, a four- year old dog that is part Shepherd and part St. Bernard. More importantly, it is a naturalistic tale about the survival of the fittest in nature. Throughout the novel, Buck proves that he is fit and can endure the law of the club, the law of the fang, and the laws of nature.

Buck had been raised in California, on the ranch of Judge Miller. There he had the run of the place and was loved and pampered by all. Unfortunately, one of the judge's workers had a gambling problem and stole Buck to sell him for fifty dollars. Buck fights being tied, caged, and beaten, but his efforts only frustrate him. He is put on a train and a boat, being shipped to Alaska to be used.

Most of the other dogs stay away from Buck because of his size and strength, but Spitz becomes his constant enemy, from whom he learns an important lesson. Spitz fights with Curly, one of the dogs that is friendly to Buck. Buck watches as all the other dogs attack and kill Curly once he is down. Buck is determined he will never be put in the same position. He will fight to the death if necessary.

Spitz constantly picks on Buck, wanting to get in a fight with him; Buck, however, resists the challenges from Spitz. Then one time he steals the resting-place that Buck has created for himself. Buck has had enough and attacks Spitz with a vengeance. Francois and Perrault have to separate the two dogs. Although the fight is stopped, the animosity continues, and the two enemies are always in a skirmish. Then one day when Spitz prematurely kills a rabbit that all the dogs have been chasing, Buck attacks again. The battle is fierce, and Buck is losing. He then calls upon his intelligence and imagination to defeat Spitz. Instead of going for his throat, Buck attacks Spitz's front legs, breaking both of them. Once he is down, the other dogs come in for the kill.

Now that Spitz has been eliminated, Buck is determined to become the leader of the dog sled team. When Francois and Perrault harness Sol-leks at the front of the team instead of Buck, he refuses to fall into his place. When the drivers try to catch him, Buck runs out of reach.

Summary of chapter 9 (Fate) Red Scarf Girl
azamat

Since junior high teachers are off helping out with the revolution, classes are cancelled.

Most students would celebrate, but Ji-li isn't interested; she wants to be in school and learn.

Besides, it's boring not going to school. There's nothing to do.

One day, she sees Aunt Xi-wen trip and fall. In the scuffle, Ji-li's cousin Shan-shan (a.k.a. Aunt Xi-wen's son) just passes by his mom without helping her.

Ji-li is shocked. That's no way to treat your mom. That's when Ji-li remembers that Shan-shan wrote a da-zi-bao against his mom. Ouch.

Before she can react, she wonders whether she should help her aunt—she doesn't want to be labeled a counterrevolutionary.

Luckily, Old Mrs. Wang gets to her aunt first and helps her up.

Later, An Yi and Ji-li see people chanting in the street. They are standing up to Du Hai's mom and calling her out for some bad stuff she did.

We don't get all the details, but An Yi breathes a huge sigh of relief; she thought it might be people against her mom (since she's a schoolteacher). Phew.

A couple days later, Ji-yun cries about some kids stealing her backpack at school. They called her a bad name because of her family history.

Ji-li feels bad for her little sister and doesn't think this treatment is fair. Hopefully their fate changes soon.

It's Chinese New Year, but no one celebrates. It's also Ji-li's thirteenth birthday, but that doesn't mean much anymore.

A few days later, one of their friend's dad's is arrested and taken away. Ji-li worries for her own family.

When Ji-li gets home, she finds An Yi there, crying over her mom. At the factory, all the teachers were forced to climb the chimney.

The girls cling together, neither really knowing what to say.

Suddenly Ji-li announces that she hates her grandpa. If he hadn't been a landlord, none of this wouldn't have happened. She's not even sure she believes that anymore, though.

Following is an example of authors' skillful use of modifiers, both single words and phrases. In it, identify the modifier or mo
zzz [600]

Answer:

I realize to my horror that rap music seemingly without melody... music with no beginning, end, or middle, music that doesn´t even seem to be music rules the world.

Explanation:

Modifiers, also known as qualifiers, can be adjectives, nouns, adverbs or even modifier phrases such as that doesn´t etc.

The whole idea of modifiers, whether they are adjectives, that describe the kind of noun, adverbs, that tell us how things are done, or simple but clarifying nouns, is that everyday sentences are skilfully turned into an elaborate and precise work of art that goes way beyond the borders of normal and often boring comunication.
