In <em>The Metamorphosis</em>, Gregor is transformed into a bug. However, the bug serves a symbolic purpose in the text. A bug is usually considered to be an insignificant, unappealing animal. This is a reflection of the author's own opinion of himself. Just like Gregor, Samsa often felt inadequate, insignificant and rejected by his own family, particularly his father.
