It was a terrible disaster that affected several locations beyond Ukraine. The wind carried radioactive material released into the atmosphere, and radiation spread throughout the world. High levels of radiation were quickly identified in places such as Poland, Austria, Sweden, Belarus and even very distant places such as the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. Cases of cancer and slow death were reported years after the accident.
