Answer: By using personification, Frost portrays his own mood.

Explanation:

<em>“Acquainted with the Night” </em>is a poem by Robert Frost. The main theme in the poem is that of isolation. The speaker is walking down the street. He feels lonely, and is dissatisfied. Frost uses personification in the very first line <em>-'I have been one </em><u><em>acquainted with the night</em></u><em>.' </em>As personification is the attribution of human characteristic to an object which is not human,<em> 'the night'</em> is, in this context, given the human ability to make friends. What the speaker is trying to convey is that he had already experienced darkness and troubles in life - this is something familiar to him. Similarly, the author states that he has<em> 'looked down</em><u><em> the saddest city lanes</em></u><em>'</em>. In reality, city lanes can be neither happy nor sad. With the use of personification, however, the man demonstrates his own feelings at the moment. He feels lonely, and everything around him seems dark and sad.

Common Sense
Ksenya-84 [330]

Thomas Paine gives several examples of when he believes it is good to go to war. He argues that it is important to be brave when a little action by the few could improve things for the whole ("at a time when a little might have saved the whole, and made them happy"). He also says that acting in self-defense is the only case in which a war is legitimate. He asks: "if a thief breaks into my house, burns and destroys my property, and kills or threatens to kill me, or those that are in it, and to "bind me in all cases whatsoever" to his absolute will, am I to suffer it?"

On the other hand, engaging in a war for offense, and not defense, is equivalent to "murder," and is completely wrong according to Paine. The comparison between this type of war and murder is a metaphor that Paine uses to give more emphasis to his opinion. Another example is the use of a thief as a character that is compared with an enemy at war.

Bingel [31]

Answer: C. To describe unethical reporting practices during the Gilded Age, and how they are similar to reporting today.

Explanation:

This is based on an article about reporting in the Gilded Age by Randall S. Sumpter. Randall talks about how the internet has made the journalism scene so saturated and competitive that reporters sometimes engaged in unethical practices to get by.

Mr. Sumpter then likened this to the Gilded Age where reporters did the same thing because just like now, there was a lot of competition then and journalists did whatever they could - no matter how unethical - to ensure that they were successful.
