The Slaughterhouse case in 1873 is notorious in the US history for severely limiting the 14th amendment. 

This case violated and mocked the 14th amendment, disregarading the Priviliges or Immunities Clause which states that “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.”

Churchill however saw that it could be less effective to attack through Normandy, France since Italy was in good proximity and could be penetrated easily with the strength and number of their allied forces. He saw they could easily procceed from there and even gain more grounds. His view prevailed.
