George Washington chose cabinet members from both, the Northern and Southern states because he wanted to show respect for different backgrounds and opinions and have a balance cabinet members that could help the nation throughout the plurality of minds. He did not want to favor any side but have a balance of Northern and Southern members and show the nation that with respect and tolerance, the US was going to proper. The most important names on Washington's first cabinet were <em>Thomas Jefferson (Secretary of State), Alexander Hamilton (Secretary of the Treasury), and Henry Knox (Secretary of War). </em>
