he city of Nicaea served as the capital of the Empire of Nicaea from 1204 to 1261 C.E. The Empire was was founded by aristocrats of the Byzantine Empire during the Fourth Crusade, when the Byzantine capital of Constantinople was occupied by European forces. However, this only lasted a few decades until Byzantine forces recaptured Constantinople in 1261 hope this helps
